Michael J. Fox in the movie 'The American President' confronts the Presidential character played by Michael Douglas about leadership.
Lewis: "You have a deeper love of this country than any man I've ever known. And I want to know what it says to you that in the past seven weeks, 59% of Americans have begun to question your patriotism."
The President: "Look, if the people want to listen to-..."
Lewis: "They don't have a choice! Bob Rumson is the only one doing the talking! People want leadership, Mr. President, and in the absence of genuine leadership, they'll listen to anyone who steps up to the microphone. They want leadership. They're so thirsty for it they'll crawl through the desert toward a mirage, and when they discover there's no water, they'll drink the sand."
The President: "Lewis, we've had presidents who were beloved, who couldn't find a coherent sentence with two hands and a flashlight. People don't drink the sand because they're thirsty. They drink the sand because they don't know the difference."
In this incredible election year we must be people who are very careful in making decisions about who will govern our nation and chart its course for the future. We cannot afford to listen to the rhetoric spewed from the lips of the would be candidates who make elaborate promises, or who change their position on critical issues overnight. These would be leaders seek to promote their agenda and careers at the expense of the American people.
Is it not ironic that millions of dollars are raised and spent on advertising that seek to promote an agenda aimed at helping America but whose truth is promoting party politics rather than what's right for America?
Being President is entirely about character. Serious problems call for serious people to solve them. I cannot tell anyone how to vote but I can say that we must look very carefully at the candidates and examine their character. Would you have your leaders negotiating at the table of the enemy? Could you honestly follow a leader who flippantly changes his mind based upon who he's speaking to at the moment? It is not my responsibility to judge anyone, but what I must do as a citizen of this great nation is to share the truth of what Scripture says about the character of a leader.
Scriptures states that a "double minded man is unstable in all his ways." We have a responsibility to guard ourselves from the rhetoric spoken to those with itchy ears; and seek out the true character of the individual speaking.
So I challenge you to look at the records of the candidates. Not just from the liberal media who report only what they want you to hear or what makes a good story…but do the research and look at the Congressional Record of the United States. Here you can research how the candidates actually voted on the critical issues that concern you today.
With much respect to the rights of everyone to have their own opinion, we are at a critical crossroads in our nation's history. We must wisely choose Godly leaders in order to secure our nation's heritage and the religious freedom that we so cherish. Failure to do so will have a catastrophic effect upon future generations and will usher in a full blown assault upon Christian values resulting in religious persecution in America.
